Thirty random UL students from multiple majors were asked to reply to a survey regarding the utilization of technology on campus. The questions on the survey are as follows:

  1. How often do your professors use technology provided in the classrooms when teaching their lecture?
  2. What technology is utilized most by your professors during lectures?
  3. What improvements could be made to enhance technology in classrooms?
  4. What sort of technology would you like to see implemented in the classrooms?

The results of the first question (How often do your professors use technology provided in the classrooms when teaching their lectures?) are presented in the pie chart below. Out of the 30 students, 14 stated that their professors utilize technology often, many stating that their professors use technology every class period. Another 14 students stated that their professors do not utilize the technology presented in classrooms and rarely use it.  2 students reported that their professors sometimes utilize technology in classrooms.

This anonymous survey had the students supply their major along with answering the questions. The graph below indicates students’ answers to the first question on the survey in accordance with their major. The graph categorized majors into their corresponding colleges. Please be advised that when observing the graph that the number of students per major are not of equal numbers. The number of students who participated in this survey from each college is as follows:

  • College of the Arts: 1
  • College of Business Administration: 1
  • College of Education: 2
  • College of Engineering: 3
  • College of Liberal Arts: 8
  • College of Nursing & Allied Health: 5
  • College of Sciences: 8
  • Major not stated: 2

Per these students’ answers, the majority of professors in the College of Liberal Arts, College of Engineering, College of the Arts, and College of Education do not utilize technology. The professors of the College of Sciences, College of Nursing & Allied Health, and College of Business Administration do utilize the technology provided to them.

The results of question two (What technology is utilized most by your professors during lectures?) were largely similar among the students. Most students reported that their professors use computers, projectors, and PowerPoint. One student mentioned TV use and another mentioned a professor using a tablet that contained lecture notes.

Question three asked students what improvements could be made to enhance technology in classrooms. The results of this question varied greatly among the surveyors. Responses included updating computers and projectors, better servers and Wi-Fi, surround sound, more TVs so students can see better, educating teachers in regard to technology, and new teaching habits by professors. Other answers included better connection between computers and projectors, and implementation of smart boards.

The last question on the survey inquired students to state what sort of technology they would like to see implemented in the classrooms. These results also varied. The responses included installing smart boards, computers, projectors, IPads, tablets, individual laptops for students, and more speakers for hearing impaired students. A couple of students thought that the technology is fine the way it is. Other answers from students was a want for technology to benefit students depending on their major, a sort of technology that breaks up the monotone of lectures, the use of interactive polling, and technology that augments reality.
