According to the Helpdesk Manager, David Savoie, the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is the world’s most widely recognized and accepted public source of the best IT service management practices. As IT shops around the world gain experience and lessons about certain practices, they note the needed improvements. They are able to combine this knowledge into a standardized framework of the best practices to ensure successful IT services within organizations.

The tool used to apply the standards to the daily practices of ITIL is known as Information Technology Service Management (ITSM). ITSM is an extremely important aspect of ITIL that should not be overlooked. The Information Technology Service Management works as a road map that paves the way for organizations to complete certain tasks and find answers to hurdles they come into contact with. This being said, ITIL and ITSM are used hand in hand, and work together to boost practices.

Currently, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) has used ITIL principles to enhance UL Lafayette’s wireless network and several STEP Labs across campus. The new and improved University website has also been created using the principles outlined in ITIL. In the past, these principles have had tremendous effects on students and technology on campus. The wireless network mentioned earlier is a great example of technology improvements to the University. The network has been enhanced to work campus wide and provides services to guests on campus as well. Continuing to use ITIL in the future will ensure that technology on campus will become more valuable to its users.
